Active in politics at a young age, she campaigned for Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater in 1964 and decided to do public service work after hearing a speech by Reverend Martin Luther King. She became a Democrat in 1968.

Hillary went to school at Wellesley College and graduated in 1969. She was active in student politics and was elected senior class president. She then attended Yale Law School, where she would meet Bill Clinton, and graduated in 1973 with honors. During her college years, she worked political jobs during the summers, including for Senator Walter Mondale and presidential candidate George McGovern. She was also a member of the presidential impeachment inquiry staff advising the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives during the Watergate scandal. Hillary would go on to take a job at the University of Arkansas Law School where her college boyfriend Clinton was also teaching. The two were married in 1975 and Hillary would go on to become First Lady of Arkansas when her husband was elected governor in 1978 and then in 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1990.

While Clinton was in office, Hillary continued to make her own career, joining a law firm in 1977 and then as part-time chairperson of the Legal Services Corporation for President Jimmy Carter. In 1988 and 1991, The National Law Journal named her one of the 100 most powerful lawyers in America. In 1992, when Clinton was elected President of the United States, Hillary began her term as the First Lady. She suffered through controversy in the Whitewater real estate scandal as well as her husband’s infidelity in the Monica Lewinsky affair. After Clinton’s presidency, Hillary ran for and won office as  U.S. Senator for New York State and easily won re-election in 2006. Two years later, she announced her intention to run for President but conceded the spot to Barack Obama when he led in the delegate vote. Soon after he was elected, President Obama nominated Hillary as Secretary of State and she has distinguished herself in the position. She is the favorite to run for the Democratic nomination ahead of the 2016 Presidential election. Bill and Hillary Clinton have one child, Chelsea, who was born in 1980.
