Nicki Minaj is a Trinidad –born American singer with an estimated net worth of $45 million dollars. Onika Tanya Maraj, known by her stage name Nicki Minaj, was born December 8, 1982 in Saint James, Port of Spain. Minaj is five feet one inches tall and weighs 129 pounds.
Minaj was born in the capital of Trinidad and Tobago to Carol and Robert Maraj. She is of mixed Afro-Trinidadian and Indian ancestry. She has two siblings, also born in Saint James. Her youth was difficult, as her father was an alcoholic and drug addict who once tried to kill his wife by lighting his home on fire. Minaj moved from Saint James to Jamaica, Queens, New York when she was young and enrolled in performing arts school. She studied the clarinet before enrolling in LaGuardia High School which specializes in music, visual and performing arts.
In 2001 Minaj was cast in the Off-Broadway play “In Case You Forget”. Her acting career failed to take off and she worked as a waitress at Red Lobster in the Bronx to pay her bills.
Minaj signed with a Brooklyn group called Full Force, where she rapped in a foursome called “Hoodstars”. It was there that she met her current hype man Scaff Breezy. She recorded the enterance song for WW Diva Victoria titled “Don’t Mess With” while with “Hoodstars” but left the group when she became unsatisfied with their lack of success. Minaj continued to make music, uploading songs to her Myspace page. She caught the attention of Fendi, CEO of Dirty Money Entertainment, who signed her to his label.
She was featured on The Come Up DVD, a popular series of DVD’s featuring underground New York rappers and discovered by Lil Wayne. She was offered guest verses on a variety of albums and personally requested by Jay-Z to sing on Robin Thicke’s single Shakin’ It 4 Daddy.
Her success continued with the release of her first studio album Pink Friday. Minaj became the first female artist to be included on MTV’s annual Hottest MC List. In October 2010, Minaj became the first female solo artists to have seven songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart simultaneously.
In September 2012 Minaj was confirmed to join the judges panel on the 12th season of American Idol. She has a reported salary of $12 million per season.
