Mya is an American R&B singer-songwriter. She is 5’5″ and weighs 150 pounds. Mya Marie Harrison was born October 10, 1979 in Washington,DC. She was named in honor of the famous poet Maya Angelou. Her father worked as a musician and singer, performing with local D.C. bands. Mya began taking dance lessons by the age of two and she also took violin lessons. At the age of ten, Mya joined a dance troupe called T.W.A. (Tappers With Attitude). While dancing with the troupe, Mya got the chance to meet world-renowned tap dancer Savion Glover of the Dance Theater of Harlem. He chose Mya to dance solo at the Kennedy Center.
Mya began teaching hip-hop and jazz dance classes to children in her free time. From 1996 to 1998, Mya performed as a dancer on B.E.T.’s teen show Teen Summit. At the same time, Mya began developing her singing voice with the help of her father. Her father started shopping her demo tape around, and it eventually caught the interest of University Music’s president Haqq Islam. After graduating high school at the age of sixteen, Mya spent time recording her debut album with Interscope records. The album featured songs with prominent artist of the time like Missy Elliot, Babyface, Dru Hill, and Silkk Tha Shocker. Successful hits like “It’s All About Me” and “Movin’ On” led to the album selling over one million copies and reaching platinum status.
In 2000, Mya released her second studio album entitled Fear of Flying. The album’s smash hit “Case of the Ex” topped the Australian singles chart for two consecutive weeks. Fear of Flying was a commercial success as well, selling over one million copies. Her third album Moodring reached Gold status per RIAA standards. In 2002, Mya won a Grammy for her collaboration on the hit song”Lady Marmalade” for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. That same year, Mya began tried her hand at acting. She landed a supporting role in the musical film Chicago. She won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance.
