At the age of six, Galliano moved with his parents to South London. His mother worked as a flamenco teacher and prided herself on the family’s appearance. She would dress up her son in the most elaborate of outfits, even if they were just going to the market. This made Galliano an easy target at school. His ill-dressed schoolmate’s would tease him for being over-dressed. Throughout the chaos, Galliano’s mother planted the seed that would sprout to make him one of the most notable contemporary British designers.
In 1981, John Galliano enrolled into Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. While attending school, he worked as a stylist for Britain’s National Theatre. His line featured intricate and elaborate pieces that demanded the fashion industry’s attention. Although he was abundant with creativity, the designer lacked business sense. Within a couple of years he was bankrupt.
After struggling for years, Galliao met American Vogue‘s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and Vogue‘s creative director, Andre Leon Talley. The two highly-connected power players helped re-introduce Galliano to the fashion world. They introduced Galliano to Portuguese fashion socialite who loaned him her house to host a fashion show. A few top models walked in his show free of charge. Galliano designed his entire collection from one bolt of fabric. He poured his everything in to the fashion show and it proved to be his second chance at success. After the re-launch of his line, financiers were signing up to help back the designer. In 1995, he was appointed the head of design for Givenchy. Two years later he became the head of design for Christian Dior.
John Galliano was named British Designer of the Year in 1987, 1994, and 1997. In 2009, he was bestowed the honor of becoming a Chevalier in the French Legion of Honour. This honor has been previously bestowed upon fashion icons like Yves Saint Laurent and Suzy Menkes. In 2011, Galliano was released from his position of head designer of Christian Dior after being found guilty of making anti-semitic remarks.
