India Arie is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and producer. India is 5’7″ and weighs 140 pounds. India Arie Simpson was born on October 3, 1975 in Denver, Colorado to mother Joyce, a former singer and father, Ralph Simpson, a former NBA basketball player. Musical inclination was a given in the Simpson household with India’s talents being celebrated from a young age as the singer excelled at the saxophone, trumpet and guitar, prompting her to pursue a career in music. At thirteen, India’s parent’s divorce relocated the future singer, her mother and her older brother to Atlanta, Georgia. After graduating high school, India began attending Savannah College of Art and Design. By 1999, India had tapped into her songwriting and performing talents and had landed a gig on popular Indie rock festival, Lilith Fair, where she’d eventually be discovered by a Universal/Motown record scout.
India’s debut album, Acoustic Soul, was released in March of 2001 to enormous success, selling 3 million copies worldwide and eventually would be certified double platinum. The singer and album received seven nominations, but zero wins, at 2002’s Grammy Awards. India released sophomore album, Voyage to India, in 2002 which nearly matched the success of Soul, selling over 2 million copies worldwide. The follow up album earned the singer/songwriter two Grammy wins in 2003 for Best R&B Album and Best Urban/Alternative Performance.
By 2013, India has released three more albums, including 2006’s Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship and 2013’s Songversation and has received four Grammy Award wins and an astonishing twenty-one nominations. India has been romantically linked to fellow singer/songwriter Musiq SoulChild and actor Chris Tucker. The singer has never been married and does not have any children.
