Ashanti is an American singer-songwriter. She is 5’3″ and weighs 157 pounds. Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas was born on October 13, 1980 in Glen Cove, New York. Ashanti discovered her love for the limelight at a young age singing and dancing at her local Arts Center and by 1994, the teenager had begun her career with small roles in Malcolm X (1992) and Who’s The Man (1993). After high school, Ashanti turned her sights on to music performing in local clubs and providing background vocals on hip hop songs including Ja Rule’s “Always on Time” and Fat Joe’s “What’s Luv”.
In 2002, Ashanti released her debut album Ashanti, which garnered three chart topping singles “Foolish”, “Happy” and “Baby”. The triple platinum selling album launched the singer into super stardom and earned her two American Music Awards and a 2003 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album. By 2004, Ashanti had secured her spot as R&B princess with appearances on VH1’s Divas and performances on several award shows, as well as two more platinum albums, Chapter II (2003) and Concrete Rose (2004). After a short break from music in 2005, the songstress released long-awaited fourth album The Declaration in 2008, the album failed to reach any commercial success and Ashanti was soon released from long time label The Inc. Records.
As well as a accomplished singer and songwriter, Ashanti has also made a name for herself in Hollywood with roles in Coach Carter (2005), John Tucker Must Die (2006) and Resident Evil Extinction (2007). The singer has been romantically linked to R&B musician and producer Chink Santana but her most publicized romance was her decade long on and off again romance with hip hop superstar Nelly form 2003 through 2013.
