Paul Allen co-founded the software company Microsoft with Bill Gates. Allen met Bill Gates at while they were both in high school in Washington state.
When the MITS Altair 8800 based on the Intel 8080 CPU, Gates and Allen decided this was the time to create their own computer software company. Gates and Allen created the Altair emulator that ran on a minicomputer, and then the BASIC interpreter. A partnership was formed with Gates and Allen and the creators of the new microcomputer, Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS). Gates and Allen trademarked the name “Microsoft” on November 26, 1976.
Allen is the is chairman of Charter Communications, and founder and chairman of Vulcan Inc., his private asset management company. Allen has a multi-billion dollar investment portfolio in over 40 other media, technology, and content companies. Allen is also the owner of three professional sports teams: the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL), and the Seattle Sounders FC franchise. Allen, like his colleague Gates, is involved in philanthropy, making contributions toward the advancement of science and technology, and to organizations related to health and human services.
